What About Bill?
There isn’t a movie Bill Murray has acted in that I don’t love! From Ghostbusters to Groundhog Day to Scrooged to (yes) The Razor’s Edge, I just love the man’s face, voice and mannerisms! What About Bob may be my favourite but frankly, every one of them is good…Stripes is on tonight with John Candy, Harold Ramis and Warren Oates (as the Sergeant) and I feel like I’m home again. Young ones might find it hokey or cornball and not get most of the jokes…but I get it all (and Lord Knows, I needed a good belly-laugh!) A 1981 movie, it’s way before political correctness came in, so you can relax and laugh at most things which, today, cause a disapproving frown. To some extent, I think that’s one of the reasons I prefer old movies: there is a certain innocence in expressing views that, at the time and in that era, were innocuous, not directed at anyone or any group in particular but instead showcasing an insularity that was totally unself-conscious, like the big toe in the sand routine. Excepted are the wartime rallying movies, like some of the early Garland-Rooney movies. These were written just before and after the McCarthy era so no blame can be laid at the actors’ door; that was just Hollywood being Hollywood.
