That little colt Stephanie is relating to is the symbol of my quest. We named him Promesse (Promise), because I made a promise to him that night that I would never let him down. Promesse died as it was expected. Those are left and I will hold my Promise to him by saving the others. Thank you Stephanie for all that you did and still are doing to raise awareness on those horses and thank you to all of you to be behind me during this long and difficult cruisade.

I am so HAPPY to hear from you, Louise! I have already face-booked your first message, as well as the demonstration location, etc. Rest assured that I am constantly emailing/blogging about the treatment of horses in QC. There are "pockets" of Quebeckers who feel as you and I do--that horses should never be subjected to slaughter, abuse and neglect. I'm on it (and have been for over a decade). I will share your comments pronto as well as what I know of the Ile D'Orleans situation. The foal, Promesse, is dead then??

Sorry, I did not come and visit sooner. Cynthia, spread awarness. Quebec is the one province where everything that is human seems to have no meaning. So spread the word around. Write your provincial, local, national SPCA, horse refuge whoever can write to the minister at ministre.mapaq@mapaq.gouv.qc.ca. Thank you for your concern. Maybe our minster will be shamed and will act. In the name of RIP Promesse, Espoir and of those who are in need of help to find a home they deserve, thank you

[from Cynthia, June 1, 2012, posted on Facebook]:
This is one of my most-read blog posts. I re-publish it here [on FB] as an answer to one of the most ignorant (yet ubiquitous) comments made just a few days ago by a kill-buyer who stated that "when horses are slaughtered, the poor and hungry world-wide could have meat to eat." Um, yeah, sure...if we want to kill starved humans slowly, given the many banned drugs horses are given, or better yet, if we think they can afford imported horsemeat. An ex-friend of mine (whose heart is in the right place) told me that European horsemeat can be got for $2 or $3 per lb. and that many Europeans eat horsemeat. Well we know that...it's just that the horsemeat they eat is locally slaughtered (probably by a local farmer/breeder), and is not relevant to our North American argument that we DO NOT WANT OUR horses slaughtered for meat to supply the five-star European restaurants who serve it to (probably) wealthy Asian or North American tourists. We cannot control what is legal or what is eaten in other countries, but we can try to control what we EXPORT to those countries, whether as food or anything else. I am not a cultural imperialist. But I don't want an export culture in my country (or province) catering to the misguided eating habits of foreign countries. That's all I'm say' n.....

Thanks for sharing this (awful) experience, Deb, especially coming from someone with your expertise, especially as a carriage-driver. Quebec a Cheval is trying to make big changes to the caleche trade here in Montreal; one of them is to have our Montreal Cavalry (Mounted Police) supervise and police the care of the horses. I think that's an excellent idea, although I'd like to see that trade completely shut down in Montreal. That's not likely to happen, but if QaCheval can make the lives (and final days) of those horses more humane, that may be the best I can hope for.

I once had a carriage ride in the city of Victoria.....during our route, some person started up a weedeater and the horse bolted. I am a NH trainer AND a driving coach, and the thought of a runaway on paved city streets scared the C*** out of me. My training kicked in and I was ready to hop into the front to help her bring "Red" under control. It wasn't needed. She reined him in and said a few soothing words, and all was fine....except for my underwear. During his fleeing moment, Red torqued himself out of one of his specially made rubber shoes. This was no gentle spook. This was a Hi-Ho Silver getaway!

I do not think horses should work in the humidity that Montreal is famous for. Unless you could promise me that they would be out there only for an hour or two at a time....never in the hottest part of the day or temps over 26C and that you took them totally out of harness and gave them a place to lie down, roll and veg for the time between shifts. And that they stayed in the outlying areas of the town that were quieter and less polluted and congested...Oh right....what's the point....? Tourists don't frequent those places.... and there would be no money to be made. Duh

Back in the days when I did horse and buggy weddings I couldn't even GET insurance from Lloyds of London....Horses and city streets and traffic are not considered a good plan.
Gee....I wonder why? The horses might be well trained but the other idiots on the road are NOT.

If people want a carriage ride- go out to the country. Keep the horses out the of city....Great grandpa and grandma had it right....Car=City....Horse = Country. I am just sayin'.....
