Karin Hauenstein: Horse Crusader

Karin and I had a rocky start.  She thought I was a horse-killer.  She’s on a ride to stop horse slaughter, and when she first emailed me, she was using a smartphone.  Somehow, the wires got crossed (and since I can’t text while driving a car, I can only imagine what it’s like being in-saddle and negotiating a phone!).  Karin is a true crusader for our horses, and not just because she’s on a four-legged walkabout to publicize the cause, but because this is a woman who has done her homework…in spades…and all of it–the ride, the research–all of it comes from sheer love and respect for horses.

What really impressed me–once I introduced myself properly–was Karin’s research into the flight chemicals released in every head-shot horse.  I will let Karin explain it

Shaming the Devil

Tell the truth and shame the devil!  Does anyone remember that old chestnut?  That’s exactly what Sonja Meadows does in the attached video.  The video (also on Youtube) was produced by Animals-Angels USA and was intended for general audiences, although some viewers have already alerted me that it is, in fact, disturbing…towards the end, just a little bit, not very but enough to make one cringe, etc.  Les images sont peu perturbantes mais les ames sensibles sont averties.  Remember that, according to the USDA’s own figures, nearly 92 per cent of horses sent to Canada for slaughter are young and healthy.  What a waste when these horses could be recycled into the live horse industry–a vibrant and thriving industry here in Quebec…

Alert! US Abattoir Being Readied to Open

Horse Harbor, a horse sanctuary in Washington State, has just published this in The Stablewoman Gazette.  UPDATE:  I removed the link as it’s clear that this was a false alarm.  Still, let’s all remain vigilant.

A Primer on Horse Slaughter (B+)

Next question:

Doesn’t the Canadian Government oversee slaughterhouses and check for dangerous substances in our food, as well as oversee humane handling of food animals?  If so, the transport of horses and horsemeat must be checked out as well, aren’t they?

 

It is indeed the mandate (job) of the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) to oversee the production of food from the transport of live animals destined for human consumption to their rendering into cellophane-and-styrofoamed packages for our supermarket shelves (see Part A, Definitions).  However, several instances of inadequate and/or insufficient manpower and violations have been brought to public attention in the past ten years.  To begin with, the low-wage positions of abattoir work tend to attract workers with minimal or no education who have had no formal training of any kind in the handling of animals before, during and after slaughter.  This creates a problem for CFIA Inspectors whose job is to observe, and, when called for, intervene with a complaint (which must be written out and formally addressed), when workers are seen to be executing unsanitary, inhumane or any insalubrious behaviour which threatens the food safety of the human consumers of the animals being slaughtered.
