REVISION: This post is outdated but I wanted to clarify PETA’s position on horse slaughter: they are against, not for it. I was duped by the pro-slaughter manipulation of certain media stories. Here, I stand corrected.

I picked up my new dental guard today.  It’s a plastic appliance I put on my teeth at night because I grind my teeth in my sleep.  My dentist suggested that one of the causes may be stress.  “Stress?” I echoed.  “No, I don’t think I’m any more stressed out than anyone else,” I replied.  But there are a few things that stress me out….   For example:  that some blonde nitwit is now worth $70 million just because she divorced someone (and there are billions of children starving);

Every Mother’s Right

One of the best arguments Jane Smiley makes in “A Year at the Races” is about mammals…how we are mammals, and how similar therefore we and all other earth mammals are.  I haven’t talked about vegetarianism or veganism on this site because it seems to incite such vitriol among the pro’ers and the con’ers.  Sooo not necessary.  Civilized debate is the hallmark of progress–not change, mind you, because not all change is progress.  You can jump up and down on a pogo stick; you may be moving, yes, but are you advancing?  So we can agree to disagree, on any point, at any time, but let’s keep it civil (otherwise, don’t darken my door again).

All Laugh Lines are Cruelty-free (Aren’t They?)

I met a man at a job fair earlier this week who recognized me as a boomer straightaway. When I asked how he could tell, he skated deftly and said I exuded that self-confidence so characteristic of boomers.  Good–no, great–save! I could tell he was a seasoned people-handler, not to say people-wrangler.  It was sweet talking with someone who got my sense of humour instantly.  That doesn’t happen so often that I can overlook it when it does happen.
