Quebeckers don’t seem to know that the two horse abattoirs here don’t even use stunbolts; they use 22-calibre rifles instead. Thus the entire argument put forward by the PQ which claims to know “Quebec values” best is bogus, completely false, and betrays an enormous ignorance of what’s going on in la patrie. I am indebted to Ihsaan Gardee writing in The Montreal Gazette today regarding the Parti Quebecois (PQ) once again demonizing cultural practices which they claim ” are against traditional Quebec values”…those apparently being to use the captive stunbolt in slaughterhouses as this is supposed to be more humane than kosher or halal slaughter methods.  Mr. Gardee refers to a study done by The School of Veterinary Medicine at Hanover University, Germany.  I urge everyone to click on that link

Spelling and Other Really Annoying Subjects

Recently, one of my Canadian colleagues commented that an American had told her:  “If you keep spelling “Defense” with an “s” instead of a “c”, you will never be taken seriously.”  Um, hello…ever heard of Canadian or British spelling?  Americans, as I have mentioned in earlier posts, do tend to, um, keep to themselves…and therefore have very little knowledge of what’s going on in other countries (except as it affects them…just watch CNN for ten hours straight and you’ll see).  I also encountered Americans at the Conference who thought I’d flown through a blizzard to reach Virginia…um, no, Autumn hasn’t quite started yet; everything in Canada is still green, just dropping to sleep as winter beckons. A family from  Brooklyn waiting at the Dorval Airport when I was on my way to Vancouver in July, questioned why all the kiosks offered baked beans with breakfast.  I nearly explained:  “Beans are a staple in the traditional Quebec breakfast,”  but the wife was so vocal and so, um, prolific in her bewilderment at the offers of baked beans, that I couldn’t find a moment to interrupt to tell them anything.

Every now and then, there is an article in The Montreal Gazette which manages to overcome The Gazette’s increasing mediocrity and is surprisingly substantive.  Hubert Bauch’s “Clinging to Conspiracies” was in this weekend’s paper.  Quoting psychologist Patrick Leman, he writes:  “…belief in conspiracies…is a coping mechanism for the insecure….on the one hand, convincing ourselves of conspiracy theories wishes away the stark, terrifying arbitrariness of life on this Earth, or, on the other, compensates for a sense of disempowerment and enables people to blame personal failures on the clandestine machinations of a malevolent governing system that conspires to keep them down….”  Towards the end of the article, Bauch quotes comedian Dennis Miller’s view as a sharp corrective to such milquetoast self-absorption:  “the biggest conspiracy has always been that there is no conspiracy.  Nobody’s out to get you. Nobody gives a shit whether you live or die.  There, do you feel better now?”

The Toronto Star features Horse Slaughter on Front Page

I was alerted to this information on the Cdn Horse Defence Coalition blog. A heartfelt thank-you to the two reporters, Robert Cribb and David Graham, who researched this article and to The Toronto Star for making it their front-page feature! I was particularly grateful to learn from the video that the reporters actually followed a horse transport to see whether the horses had been fed or watered at any point. (We know they aren’t, but having it published by the mainstream media has an impact.) I read some of the comments from Star readers and it fascinates me that the ratio of pro-slaughter to anti-slaughter is almost two-to-three. Since some of them claimed to be horse-owners, you’d think that the article would compel them to do their own research, but then again, the level of ignorance about nature in general was appalling, eg. “oh yeah…it’s less cruel than to let them be eaten in the wild by bears and wolves.” Huh? Then there was the horse-owner who never gives bute to his five horses…well, not never…well, only three of five…or two of four…or, not in the past four years anyway…or…I got dizzy with the changing stats. Then there were Americans who slammed Canada (“we don’t do it in our country”)…um, no, you send them to us so we can do it for you (shame on us!). Some Americans rightly pointed out that their ban on slaughter didn’t help since so many horses are now left to die, abandoned by a roadside. Overbreeding, anyone? Unable or unwilling to euthanize, anyone? Those with a good appetite revelled in their regular diet of horsemeat: bute a l’orange, anyone?  Here are the links:

I’ll blog more on the above shortly.  In the meantime, I’ll keep hoping that The Montreal Gazette will feature something similar; after all, the Massueville Abattoir owned by Viandes Richelieu Meats is one of the worst offenders in terms of the manner in which they slaughter horses.
